Pitching for blogging opportunities this year has been tougher than ever, in my personal experience. I’m not sure if the number of opportunities has declined, or whether there’s just more bloggers applying for them. It got me thinking; I have the ‘typical’ family unit of two adults and two children … and I’ve found pitching really hit and miss. So, what about families consisting of more children? Because they have a defined parenting niche, does this result in them being more successful working with brands? Or do they feel that pitching is a waste of their time? I asked some Tots100 parent bloggers, with 4 children or more, how they find pitching to brands for collaborations. Positives and negatives – and this is what they told me.
We cover all age ranges in one family!
Being a parent blogger of 4+ kids has its pros and cons. Large families are well received for toy reviews, we were chosen as Toys R Us Toyologists and Thorpe Park Ambassadors specifically because we could cover all age ranges of children in one family! When it comes to events and days out, it really depends on the PR. Most invites are for 2 or 3 children. I reply that our blog is about large families and some reply with an extended invite, others offer for me to pay for the extra children , which sort of defeats the point of going as it is then costing me money to promote an attraction and we decline.

In some ways being a large family has really helped me in my blogging career and in others it has meant we’ve missed out on opportunities aimed at the average 2.4 family. Several times I’ve got as far as reaching the stage of signing a contract before the PR has realised we have four children and no longer fit the mould. Other times I think being a larger family has given us an edge and we’ve been given some amazing opportunities with brands who want a larger family, with a real mix of ages, to promote their product or attend their event. I have been offered many trips for myself and one child!
We have four kids, and press trips are basically a no-go unless I organise and pitch to the relevant people myself (I have been offered many for myself and one child though; I always ask which of my children I should choose to see Disney/Lapland/Desert over and above their siblings). I’ve never yet met a brand happy to accommodate a family of 6 for a press trip unless it’s a self-catering property or ferry travel. But it doesn’t make me angry; I totally understand, and it’s the exact reason that these are our personal travel options too. Travel with big families is expensive, and accommodating for six when you only get one review doesn’t make good business sense; much better to host two smaller families, and double your coverage for the same outlay. Sometimes I’ve been offered a cheaper rate to add the extra kids on, but usually I simply accept that organised press trips are just not open to us.

I have seven children and think in many ways that has been a blessing in blogging as well as in my life. The blog’s name, madmumof7, clearly states my family size and makes me memorable which is vital in our increasingly crowded marketplace.
When I was selected as an ambassador for Butlins they accommodated my large family, allocating two connecting rooms in one of their hotels to fit in all of us (except my eldest son who had work.)
Other PR companies have been supportive on the whole. If I’ve been invited to a family event and ask for extra tickets they usually agree. I am mindful of their budget and their need to spread coverage so usually only ask for tickets for the children the event is targeted at.
Choosing which children to attend an event can be hard but it all evens out across the year and they all generally get to do some really cool and fun stuff.
