Fairtrade Farmer

This month, here at Tots100, we’re supporting a really important cause, and we would love for you to get involved and help the Fairtrade Foundation, a charity that .

Fairtrade is about doing trade in a way that’s fair for everyone. Whenever you buy a product that carries the Fairtrade Mark, it means farmers and workers in developing countries have been paid a fair price for their crop or produce. It’s about challenging injustice and helping some of the world’s poorest people to live better lives.

We want you to help in three ways:

One: Buy Fairtrade

Did you know that there are more than 3,000 Fairtrade-certified products on sale in the UK? You can buy Fairtrade fruit and vegetables, but also alcohol, clothing and beauty products. Next time you go the supermarket, swapping just one product you normally buy for the Fairtrade alternative could make a real difference to a family in the developing world. And it’s the perfect opportunity to talk to our children about fairness and justice.

TWO: Cook Fairtrade

Many of our bloggers are brilliant cooks, and we know you love sharing recipes with your readers. So this month we’ve challenged you to share a recipe with us that uses one of our selected Fairtrade ingredients – you can see the list of ingredients here.

The Fairtrade Foundation is offering a prize for the best Fairtrade recipes from Tots100 and Foodies100 bloggers – you could win a set of signed cook books, £200 of cookware and a goodie bag filled with Fairtrade produce. Just share a link to your recipe in the comments below this post, before October 8, 2012. It can be an original recipe, an adapted recipe or even an old recipe modified to include one of our list of approved ingredients – the important bit is that it must include at least one Fairtrade ingredient, and the post must explain that you’re using Fairtrade ingredients. We’re also asking you to Tweet a link to your recipe using the #bakeitfair hashtag.

three: spread the #Bakeitfair fairtrade message

If you’re not  a cook, you can still help Fairtrade by spreading the word about Fairtrade products to your readers, and followers. A great way to do this is by sharing the Big Fair Bake competition currently running on the Fairtrade website. All you have to do is tell Fairtrade who you’d like to bake for, enter your details and you could win a KitchenAid blender. SCORE! Please, please take 20 seconds to Tweet the link below – or share it on Facebook, or your blog – it’s a small action that could reach a lot of people.

That’s it. There’s nothing hard, or complicated here. We’re just asking you to think about what you buy and what you cook with. And if you would like to support Fairtrade, then why not buy something different, or bake something differently this week – and ask your followers to do the same?
